There are a total of 4 papers. Paper I & II are compulsory and are held for all the categories of posts in CGLE. Paper-III is conducted for only those who apply for the post of Junior Statistical Officer (JSO). Paper IV is held only for those candidates who apply for the posts of Assistant Audit Officer (AAO)/Assistant Accounts Officer(AAO).

The merit of candidates is prepared on the basis of overall performance in Tier-I, Tier-II and Tier-III.

Tier 1:

The section-wise syllabus of CGL Tier 1 is given below.
1. General Intelligence & Reasoning: This section will contain questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. Questions are to be asked from analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning and figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc. The topics are, Semantic Analogy, Symbolic/Number Analogy, Figural Analogy, Semantic Classification, Symbolic/Number Classification, Figural Classification, Semantic Series, Number Series, Figural Series, Problem Solving, Word Building, Coding & de-coding, Numerical Operations, Venn Diagrams, Drawing inferences, Symbolic Operations, Trends, Space Orientation and Space Visualization, Punched hole/pattern –folding and un-folding, folding and completion of Figural Pattern, Indexing, Address matching, Date & city matching, Classification of centre codes/roll numbers, Embedded Figures, Critical thinking, Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, Small & Capital letters/numbers coding, decoding and classification, Other sub-topics, if any.

2. General Awareness: Through this section, candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to Society is tested. Questions test candidate’s knowledge of current events, every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as expected of any educated person. Questions are asked relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining History, Geography, Economic Scene, Culture, General Policy & Scientific Research.
सामान्य जानकारीइसका उद्देश्य अभ्यर्थी के आसपास के परिवेश की सामान्य जानकारी व समाज में उनके अनुप्रयोग की जाँच करना होगा सामान्य घटनाओं और दिन प्रतिदिन के अवलोकन के ऐसे मामलों के ज्ञान एवं उनके वैज्ञानिक पहलु सम्बन्धी अनुभव की जाँच हेतु भी प्रशन पत्र पूछे जाएँगे जिसकी जानकारी की अपेक्षा किसी शिक्षित व्यक्ति से की जा सकती है इस परिक्षण में भारत और उसके पडोसी देशों के सम्बन्ध में विशेषकर इतिहास,  संस्कृतिभूगोलआर्थिक परिदृश्यसामान्य नीती वैज्ञानिक अनुसन्धान आदि से सम्बंधित प्रशन भी शामिल होंगे |

3. Quantitative Aptitude: The questions in this section will test the ability of a candidates for appropriate use of numbers and number sense of the candidate. Questions includes computation of whole numbers, decimals ,fractions and relationships between numbers, Percentage. Ratio & Proportion,Square roots, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Right Circular Cylinder, Spheres, Hemispheres, Trigonometric ratio, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary angles, Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram & Pie chart.

4. English Comprehension: Candidate’s understand of correcting English, basic comprehension and writing ability, etc. would be tested. Questions includes Fill in the blanks, comprehension passage, sentence error correction, synonyms, antonyms, one word substitution, improvement of sentences etc.
अंग्रेजी ज्ञान इसमें अभ्यर्थी की अंग्रेजी भाषा की व उसके प्रयोगउसके लेखन की योग्यता और परिज्ञान को जांचा जाएगा | निम्नलिखित में से प्रश्न पूछे जाएंगे | 
रिक्त स्थान, कॉम्प्रिहेंशन पैसेज, वाक्य त्रुटि सुधार, समानार्थी, विपरीतार्थी, एक शब्द प्रतिस्थापन, वाक्य आदि में सुधार भरें।

The questions in Parts A, B, & D will be of a level commensurate with the essential qualification viz. Graduation and questions in Part C will be of 10th standard level.


SSC CGL Syllabus for Tier 2: In tier 2 examination, there are two papers. Here is the syllabus of these papers.

SSC CGL Tier 2 Syllabus:

Paper 1 - Quantitative Ability (10th Level): The questions will be designed to test the ability of appropriate use of numbers and number sense of the candidate but to an higher level than that of tier 1 questions. The questions are asked from computation of whole numbers, decimals, LCM & HCF, fractions and relationships between numbers, Percentage. Ratio & Proportion, Square & Cube roots, Averages, Interest (Simple / Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons , Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Trigonometric ratio, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary angles, Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram & Pie chart.
Paper-II (12th level): English Language & Comprehension: Questions in this components will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding and knowledge of English Language. Questions in Tier 2 English includes Spot the error, fill in the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, spelling/detecting mis-spelt words, idioms & phrases, one word substitution, improvement of sentences, active/passive voice of verbs, conversion into direct/indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts, shuffling of sentences in a passage, cloze passage & comprehension passage.


SSC CGL Syllabus for Tier 2 Paper 3 (Graduation Level):

Paper-III: Statistics for Junior Statistical Officer (JSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation.
Collection Classification and Presentation of Statistical Data – Primary and
Secondary data, Tabulation of data; Methods of data collection; Graphs and charts;
Frequency distributions; Diagrammatic presentation of frequency distributions.
Measures of Central Tendency- Common measures– mean median and mode; Partition values- quartiles, deciles, percentiles.
Measures of Dispersion- Common measures dispersion – range, quartile deviations, mean and standard deviation; Measures of relative dispersion.
Moments, Skewness and Kurtosis – Different types of moments and their relationship; meaning of skewness and kurtosis; different measures of skewness and kurtosis.
Correlation and Regression – Scatter diagram; simple correlation coefficient; simple regression lines; Spearman’s rank correlation; Multiple regression; Multiple and partial correlation (For three variables only); Measures of association of attributes.

SSC CGL Syllabus for Tier 2 Paper IV:

General Studies (Finance and Economics) for the post of Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer in Indian Audit & Accounts Department under
CAG.

SSC CGL Skill Test Details

For the post of Tax Assistants (Central Excise & Income Tax):
For Tax Assistant Posts, Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) is held on computer which is of qualifying nature. The speed should be 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depression per hour. The “Data Entry Speed” Skill Test at 2000 (two thousand) key depressions for a duration of 15 (fifteen) minutes will be organized. Computers are given to candidates at the centre and they have to qualify this speed test.
Only those candidates who secure at least the minimum qualifying marks in the written exam, will be eligible to appear in the SKILL TEST. The SKILL TEST will be held at the Commission’s Regional/Sub Regional Offices or at other Centers as may be decided by the Commission.
OH candidates opting for the post of Tax Assistant in CBDT are exempted for appearing in skill test but not exempted for post of Tax Assistant in CBEC. HH and VH candidates are not eligible for exemption from the skill test. VH candidates may be allowed appropriate compensatory time in DEST at par with typing test. Only those VH candidates who opt for scribes in the written examination will be provided passage reader at the time of skill test.
The Skill Test will be of qualifying nature.


SSC CGL CPT Exam Details:

In Computer Proficiency Test (CPT), There are three modules- Word Processing, Spread Sheet and Generation of Slides. This test is held of qualifying nature and held for the post of Assistant Section Officer of CSS Assistant Section Officer (MEA) and Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under M/o Corporate affairs, Assistant (GSI) in M/O Mines. Scheme of DOPT for the post of Assistant Section Officer in CSS, Assistant Section Officer (MEA) and Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under M/o Corporate affairs, Assistant (GSI) in M/O Mines does not envisage exemption from CPT for any category of PH candidates.

CGL Physical Test Details


Physical standards for the post of Inspector (Central Excise/Examiner/Preventive Officer/Inspector & Sub-Inspector in CBN:
Height should be 157.5 cms (Height relaxable by 5 cms. In the case of Garwalis, Assamese, Gorkhas and members of Scheduled Tribes.). Chest of the candidate should be 81 cms. (fully expanded with a minimum expanses of 5 cms.)
Physical Test:
This includes Walking of 1600 metres in 15 minutes and Cycling of 8 Kms. In 30 minutes.


Female Candidates:
  1. Physical standards (Minimum):
Height of Female candidates should be 152 cms. (relaxable by 2.5 cms.). Weight should be 48 Kgs. (Weight Relaxable by 2 Kgs. for Gorkhas, Garwalis, Assamese and Members of Scheduled Tribes.)


  1. Physical Test :
Walking : 1 Km. in 20 minutes.
Cycling : 3 Kms. in 25 minutes.


The test of “Walking” shall not be insisted in case of OL and OAL categories.
The test of “Cycling” shall not be insisted in case of OA, OL and OAL categories.


Physical standards for the Post of Sub- Inspector in Central Bureau of Investigation:
a) Height
For men - 165 cms.
For women - 150 cms.
Height relaxable for Hillsmen and Tribals : 5 cms.


b) Chest :
Chest measurement should be 76 cms. with expansion (No such requirement in case of female candidates)
c) Vision : Eye-sight (with or without glasses)
Distant vision should be 6/6 in one and 6/9 in the other eye.
Near vision should be 0.6 in one eye and 0.8 in other eye.


Physical standards for the Post of Sub- Inspector (SI) in National Investigation Agency:
a) Height
For men candidates - 170 cms.
For women candidates - 150 cms.
The Height of Men candidates is relaxable for Hillsmen and Tribals by 5 cms.
b) Chest :
Chest should be 76 cms. with expansion (No such requirement in case of female candidates)
c) Vision: Eye-sight (with or without glasses)
Distant vision should be 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other eye.

Near vision should be 0.6 in one eye and 0.8 in the other eye.
